The East Riding Festival of Words

The East Riding Festival of Words 2019 poetry competition is now open for entries. This year's theme is 'My Mind, My Thoughts'. Entries will be judged by a panel of published Yorkshire poets, led by James Nash. Poems are submitted anonymously, so each entry is judged on its own merits. Winners will be invited to read their poems at the special event, Poet Fest, in Bridlington in January 2020.

Mslexia Poetry Competitions

The Mslexia and PBS Women's Poetry Competitions 2019:

• Women's Poetry Competition: Enter three poems of any length for the entry fee of £10. The judge is Malika Booker. The first prize is £2,000 plus optional mentoring and a writing retreat. There a second prize of £400 and a third prize of £250. 17 finalists will each get £250 and the best entry by an unpublished poet will win £250.

• Women's Pamphlet Competition: For women who have not previously published a full collection. Submit up to 24 pages of poetry (up to 20 poems). The entry fee is £20 and the judge is Amy Wack. The winner's pamphlet will be published by Seren Books and the winner will get £250.

Free Creative Writing Course

The Bristol Short Story Prize is open until May 1st, 2019.

Submit stories of up to 4,000 words on any theme.

Prizes: £1,000, £500, £250. There are 17 runner-up prizes of £100 each. The twenty shortlisted stories will be published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology.

Creative FutureMyriad Editions and New Writing South seek the best poets and fiction writers from under-represented backgrounds—those who face barriers due to mental health, disability, identity or social circumstance.

We’re looking for manuscripts of fiction (8-10,000 words) and poetry (40-45 pp. at 20 lines/page).  Six writers will be selected, supported to polish their manuscripts and further their careers, and be published in individual short books.

Lucy Cavendish College Fiction Prize

The Lucy Cavendish College Fiction Prize is open until February 8, 2019 (noon).

Open to women over 21 who have not had a full-length novel published.

Submit the first 40-50 pages and a synopsis of the remainder (5-10 pages).

The winner will receive £1,500. The shortlisted entrants will receive a consultation with a Peters Fraser Dunlop agent. Shortlisted entrants will also be invited to the Annual Fiction Prize dinner at Lucy Cavendish College, on the evening of Thursday 23 May 2019.

RSL Literature Matters Awards

The RSL’s Literature Matters Awards aim to reward and enable literary excellence and innovation.  Each year, after an open call for proposals, the Awards will be given to individual writers or other literary creators, recognising their past achievements and providing them with financial support to undertake a proposed new piece of writing or literary project.  Launched as part of the RSL’s Literature Matters programme, priority will be given to proposals which (a) will help connect with audiences or topics outside the usual reach of literature, and/or (b) will help generate public discussion about why literature matters.
